John Lewis Groy, 90, of Buena Vista, C0, passed away on April 3rd, 2019 at Columbine Manor in Salida Co.  John was born July 27, 1928 to Lewis and Helen Groy on a small ranch, west of Salida near Maysville, Co .  He attended Pinon Grove, a one room school house near Maysville where he completed his elementary education.  His family moved from the ranch to Saguache, CO in 1942 where he graduated from high school in 1946.

He married Pearl Hazard in 1949 and worked for the Bureau of Land Management in the San Luis Valley for a short time.  John and Pearl and their 6 month old son John D moved to Buena Vista in 1950, where they began their lives in the theatre business.  The Pearl Theatre and the Comanche Drive In brought movie entertainment to the community for many years.   John was active in the community, serving as a volunteer fireman, town council member and Mayor.  He enjoyed the outdoors, was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed mining and prospecting.

John is survived by his son John D ( Barbara) Groy Buena Vista; daughter, Vania (Paul) Nameth, Cotopaxi, Co;  four grandchildren Daniel and Mike Groy, Haley and Logan Nameth;  3 great grandchildren, Scott, Caylie and Ryan Groy;  Sisters Mary Lou (Fritz) Little, McDonough, GA and Helen (Richard) Leavitt, Salida, CO;    brother in law Earl McDaniel, Canon City, CO;  half-brother Thomas Lee Groy and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wives Pearl and Joyce, grandson John Robert Groy and siblings Lewis R. Groy Jr and Josie McDaniel.

A private family service will be held April 12th at 1pm.

John, it is hard, but you will be strong during this time. I said recently to another that is facing this, "nobody lives forever but darn it that don't mean I want to let anybody go!"

I have a lot of memories, Some stories, you have even more!

John was a blessing to our community and we thank him for giving us the movie theaters and years of entertainment. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

So sorry to hear of your Dads passing. I know it has been tuff the last years for the family. Although I didn't know him personally I do know he was a heck of a man by knowing many of his family. Thoughts and prayers to all of you.

John...Barbara and sorry at the loss of John much he will be missed..saw him last year for a bit at the well I remember all the times John would stop and visit when I had my cafe and we would talk and have coffee ...was always a pleasure seeing him....whether there or elsewhere we would run into one another.....we always had a good time with each other's company....he was so kind and generous......loved his stories and love for life....he will be sorely missed....I am so grateful I had the opportunity to know him and call him my friend....I pray for you all to have peace and comfort knowing John is in His Father's Arms with John Jr......looking down upon their love to all......
