Willie Barela, 84, of Minturn passed away Saturday, October 6th, 2018.  Willie was born July 13th, 1934 in La Petaca, New Mexico to Serafin and Elizaida Barela.
He grew up a passionate baseball player, his skill as a pitcher was unmatched throughout Northern New Mexico. He was called ‘Bullets’ due to his ability to throw more than 100mph, something he was very proud of his entire life. A feat that caught the eyes of scouts who invited him to try-out for hopes of Major League play. Although Willie never went, his priorities to his widowed mother and numerous siblings far exceeded the temptation.
In 1958 Willie married the love of his life Emiliana Barela (Lovato).  The next year they moved out to Minturn, before Vail was even on the map and this valley was practically untouched. He had landed a job at the nearby Gilman Mine where he would work for the next 24 years until its closure.  After the mine, he worked alongside his wife, kids, and much of his family at the Antlers in Vail, as well as a janitor at Battle Mountain High School.  He enjoyed watching his Colorado Rockies, Denver Broncos, Wheel of Fortune, & The Price Is Right, as well as listening to country and spanish music.
Willie touched many lives, whether it’s giving you his last $20, putting a roof over the head of family & friends, or physically saving the life of someone in dire need. He was an excellent hunter, fisherman, lumberman, and most importantly an unbelievable family man.
Willie is survived by his loving wife of 60 years and caregiver Emiliana Barela, children; Carl Barela (Angela Torrez) of Eagle, CO, Elvira (Duane) Gustafson of Gypsum, CO, & Daphne (Mike) Helmer of Eagle, CO. Grandchildren; Stephen Barela (Bertha Rios), Alexandria Barela of Eagle, CO, & Bryan Gustafson, Jared Gustafson of Gypsum, CO. Former daughter-in-law; Connie Medina. Siblings; Harvey (Edulia) Barela of Gypsum, CO, Serafin Barela of Alcalde, NM, & Feloniz (Salome) Roybal of Santa Fe, NM. Sister-in-laws; Lora Montez and Bersabe Vigil who held a special place in his heart, and numerous special nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Leo Barela, sisters; Stella Torrez, Felicita Peña & Amalia Gurule.
Special thank you to the wonderful nurses at Castle Peak Senior Life & Rehab.
Services will be held Saturday October 13th at Saint Patrick Parish in Minturn, viewing at 9:30am, rosary at 10am, mass at 11am with burial to follow. Reception to follow at Saint Patrick Spirit Center.

Millie, Carl and Vira, So sorry for your loss. I loved knowing Willie and all the great years at the Antlers. He was a sweet man, funny and so nice. I loved watching the Broncos games on that big ol' TV he had won. Wow, great memories. I remember the fun night celebrating Millie and Willie's 25th Anniversary up at the Casa Blanca in Leadville. Gone, but not forgotten. Let's keep the good memories close to our hearts. Love from Bert and Kim.
