Dolores Evelyn “Dee” (Rolland) Mason, 80, passed away September 15, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver. She was born July 20, 1935 to Clarence Rolland and Sara (Vogt) Rolland in Geneva, Illinois. The family later moved to Jefferson, Wisconsin where Dee graduated from Jefferson High School. She went on to study nursing at the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Milwaukee. After her pinning as a registered nurse she joined the US Air Force. While she was a flight nurse stationed at Lackland AFB in San Antonio she met Robert Mitman “Bob” Mason and they were married on June 24, 1959. She quickly grew to love his three children. Bob and Dee served for five years in Japan before returning stateside to Ellsworth AFB in Rapid City, SD. While they were stationed in South Dakota their son Daniel was born and Dee left the US Air Force having achieved the rank of Captain. Near the end of their time at Ellsworth they made a trip to Frontier Ranch with their youth group kids and fell in love with Buena Vista. They purchased a lot in Trail West Village, hired a builder, picked a house plan and then returned to their duty in South Dakota. For their next deployment they went back overseas to Ankara, Turkey. While there, the house in Colorado was built and their daughter Ruth was born. In October of 1967 they returned stateside and moved into the new house in Trail West.
Dee continued her nursing career, working as a school nurse, public health nurse, and home health nurse, as well as working for Mercy McNamara Hospital in Fairplay, the Department of Corrections and Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center in Salida. When Bob was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease she stopped working to care for him full time.  She cared faithfully for him until his death in 2002.
Bob and Dee believed in investing in the lives of kids and were very active youth group leaders in Japan, Rapid City and Buena Vista. Their home was often filled with teenagers and they took many kids on trips with their family. Over the years they hosted foreign exchange students from Brazil, Japan, Germany and Chile. Dee traveled as a nurse to serve the people of Uganda and Ecuador. Later in life she traveled to the Ukraine and Argentina on mission trips.
Dee was always a caregiver and she leaves behind a legacy of loving service to others. She volunteered with Angel of Shavano Hospice and the Arkansas Valley Christian Mission. She was active in her church, Gideons International, and the American Legion.
Dee was full of life and always had a smile and a kind word for others. She was known to make friends everywhere she went and she cared genuinely for people all over the world.
Dee was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her infant brother Thomas and her daughter Judy.  She is survived by her siblings: Bob Rolland of Johnson Creek, WI; Clyde Rolland of Ft Atkinson, WI;  Judy McGinnis of Eagle River, WI; and by her children: Lindy Book of Pocahontas, AR; Rob Mason (Betty Ann) of Huntsville, TX; Daniel Mason (Karla) of Lakewood, CO; and Ruth Teipel (Chris) of Buena Vista. She is also survived by her beloved grandsons: Grant Mason of Rapid City, SD; Patrick and Matthew Thompson of Buena Vista, CO; Kale Mason of Lakewood, CO; and by many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating the gift of her life will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Mountain Heights Baptist Church. Interment at Ft Logan National Cemetery will follow at a later date.
Memorial contributions can be made in her honor to Gideons International or Mountain Heights Baptist Church.
