June F. Masterson passed away on September 24, 2015 surrounded by her children.  She was 90 years old.
June was born in Norfolk VA, on June 10, 1925. She was raised in Urbana VA with her two brothers, Eugene and George. In her youth, June enjoyed crab fishing, swimming, and catching fireflies. She was a tomboy and loved to get dirty and help out on her family farm. In her early 20’s June worked for the Naval Base in Norfolk VA, where she became the first female key punch operator. She enjoyed living near a Naval Base and spent many nights with her friends dancing the Jitter Bug and meeting the naval officers.
When June was 25, she started a family, and became a mother to John, Hank, Guy, and Fran Masterson. June and her family moved to Leadville, Co in 1969.  There, June met some of her dearest friends and came to enjoy the great outdoors, bowling, the Lake County Panthers, cooking, reading, playing card games, watching the Broncos, the Nuggets, and gambling in Blackhawk.  During her time in Leadville June worked as a clerk in the Lake County Treasurers office before retiring in 1996.
June’s family meant the world to her and when she became a grandmother, she could always be found at a panthers game, whether it be to watch her son Guy coach, her granddaughters  Heather and Carrie  play basketball, or her grandson Kaelen play in the high school band, jazz band, and track team. Later, she could be found supporting her great grandchildren in numerous sporting and school events. During the holidays, June could be found in the kitchen making her famous stuffing, Jell-o, banana cream pie and deviled eggs. Later, time would be spent around the kitchen table, playing the all-time family favorite, Yahtzee. A record of bests and worst’s was,  and is kept for the hundreds of Yahtzee tournaments played, and Grandma June had the all time lowest score, an accomplishment that was accompanied by plenty of teasing!
June had a smile for everyone she met. June found the good in everyone and would give you the shirt off of her back. She was kind hearted, funny, loving and full of life. She was sweet and caring but could also shock you with her sassiness that has been passed down from generation to generation.
June is survived by her children, Hank (Betty) Masterson of Hawaii, Guy Masterson, and Fran Masterson of Leadville, her grandchildren, Heather (Tony) Solomon, Magna Utah, Carrie (Scott) Scanavino, Loveland Co. and Kaelen Masterson, Greeley Co. Her great grandchildren, Julian,  Branden, Kyle, Alexis,  Desitny and Kieran.
June is preceded in death by her mother, Verna Belle Culpepper, her father, Salathiel Fitchett, and her brothers, Eugene “Genie” Fitchett ,  Salathiel George Fitchett Jr, and her son John D. Masterson.

Mrs. Masterson will be missed by many, but especially by me. I have known her and the family since they moved to Leadville. She always had a kind word and a hug for me and everyone she came in contact with.

Her children have all gotten her personality. I know that she was a great mother and grandmother to her children and all the kids in the neighborhood. She will be thought of everyday of my life. May the family go on with smiles and good memories of Mrs. Masterson.

We felt so bad when we learned that June had passed. June was such a lovely lady and always so friendly. We spent a lot of time on the same bleachers watching the Panthers. Know that our thoughts and prayers are with all of your family.

God Bless her soul with a 'quick trip' to heaven....I also worked with June at the Insurance office, and, had some fun times with her...she was always so sweet and kind to everyone.

I was so sorry to hear about June's passing. What a tremendous woman she was. Her ornery smile and giggles have always been my favorite memories of her. You all brought her a lot of joy and no doubt your memories are abundant. I can't be at tomorrow's gathering but I will be thinking of all of you. Love you much, Frank

Dear Hank, Guy and Fran,

I was sad to see that your mom had passed away. I didn't know her personally but I always saw her around town with one of you or with grandchildren. She certainly was well- liked in our community.

She had to be special to have raised the 3 of you (and John) and to have seen how great the 3 of you are! I was glad to have spent time with Hank on his trip up here and want to offer my condolences to Guy, who I worked with for years!

May you find comfort in your memories.
