Phylis P. Maes, 86 of Columbine Manor in Salida, Colorado since December 2009 (formerly of Leadville) was taken to heaven by angels on Sunday, December 30, 2012.  She was born on October 25, 1926 in Gardner, Colo. to Edward and Deluvina Medina Valdez.  She married Noah Maes on August 22, 1943 in Gardner, Colo.  He preceded her in death.

Phylis was a homemaker and also cooked for various restaurants.  She was a member of Holy Family Parish in Leadville.  She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, and cooking.  She loved music, family get-togethers and loved meeting people.  She was very creative.  Phylis also enjoyed playing guitar at Columbine Manor for Sweet Music and had been voted Valentine Queen there for two years in a row.  She was very well liked at Columbine Manor and will be deeply missed.

Phylis is survived by her daughters Carol and husband William “Wally” Martinez of Leadville, Donna and husband Adan Martinez of Salida, Dorothy and husband Rudy Maestas of Leadville, and Nancy Maes of Salida; sons Gilbert F. Maes, Sr., and Albert G. Maes, both of Leadville, grandchildren Gilbert F. Maes, Jr, Noah C. Maes and Penny Harvey, Melissa Maestas and John Seals, Steven D. Maestas and Samantha Valesquez, and Adam B. Martinez, great grandson Alexander Noah Maes, brothers Ben A. Valdez, John R. Valdez and Andrew D. Valdez and wife Toni, sisters in law Theresa Maes, Flora Silva and husband Sonny, Beatrice Baily, and Lilly Valdez, many nieces, nephews and cousins, and her “little angel” companion.  She is also survived by her extended family and friends at Columbine Manor.  Phylis is preceded in death by her husband, son Joseph N. Maes and brother Fermin E. Valdez.

A visitation was held from 11- 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Leadville with a rosary service beginning at 11:30 a.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan.5, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Reverend Father Jesse Perez as Celebrant.  Burial was at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Leadville with a reception to follow at Leadville Elks Lodge #236.  Bailey-Kent Funeral Home of Leadville assisted the family with arrangements.
