Johanna Margaret Schaefer, 96, of Leadville, Colorado passed away on June 8, 2019 in Leadville. She was born October 26, 1922 in Leadville to Charles and Agnes (Pucel) Jakopic. She married Ted Schaefer on August 27, 1950 in Leadville, Colorado.
Johanna was a mother and homemaker and belonged to the Musicians Union, the St. Joseph’s Church Choir, was the Secretary for the American Fraternal Union and was a member of the Slovene National Benefit Society for 80 years. She was an avid bowler, loved dancing to polka music and watching her beloved Colorado Rockies. Johanna also crocheted hundreds of afghans, many of which she donated to the ECU patients at St. Vincent Hospital.
Johanna is survived by her sons Carl (Donna) Schaefer of Leadville, David (Rhonda) Schaefer of Farmington, New Mexico; grandson Riley (Delanie) Schaefer of Sanford, North Carolina; granddaughters Claire (Scott) Berger of Miliken, Colorado, Megan (Kevin) Welch of Thornton, Colorado, Kelli (Jerry) Fellows of Ogden, Utah; great grandchildren Brayden and Bryant Schaefer and Cooper and Paxton Welch and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Leadville with the Recitation of the Rosary to follow the visitation at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 14, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with burial to follow at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Leadville. A reception will follow the interment at the Leadville Elks Lodge, #236. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lake County Civil Center Association or the Old Church Fund.
